S4: Advances in Ceramic Matrix Composites

Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are endowed with excellent combination properties, which make them leading candidates for extremely environmental applications, such as aerospace, nuclear industries, transportation, optical systems and chemical industries, etc. In the past few years, extensive research has been conducted and significant progress has been made in the selection and design, fabrication and processing, properties and performance evaluation, and applications etc. pertaining to CMCs. However, challenges remain with regard to increasing the penetration degree of CMCs into the marketplace, which depends on consistent development of CMCs with improved performance, thus providing solutions for engineering conditions with specific requirements.
The purpose of this symposium is to provide a broader forum for scientists and engineers from all over the world to present and discuss their recent advances and developments in the areas of design, processing, characterization, and applications of Ceramic Matrix Composites. This symposium will focus on the fundamental issues and engineering application challenges to advance our understanding and the utilization of CMCs.

Focused topics:
(1) Fiber, preform, interface/interphase, matrix and coating of CMCs
(2) Innovative processing routes and methods for CMCs
(3) Processing-microstructure-mechanical properties correlation of CMCs
(4) Corrosion, oxidation, ablation and irradiation behaviors of CMCs
(5) Damage evaluations and failure mechanisms of CMCs
(6) Advanced modeling & simulation for CMCs
